About Us

Mission

Backyard Stages reimagines the classical works of the past and provides fresh perspectives on the future through theatrical events and educational programming.

Values

Experience: Whether onstage, offstage, or in the classroom, we believe that immersive participation and imaginative interaction help connect our different lived experiences.

Play: Abundant joy is a main tenet of our work and humor informs how we creatively engage with audiences, artists, students, and staff. Fun comes first (even when it’s second).

Intention: By practicing active listening and deliberate dialogue, we aim to respect and support diverging opinions. We find equal importance in the actions of uplifting and questioning, especially during complicated times for the theatre and civil society.

Collaboration: Art is meant to be shared. Our belief is that purposeful communication provides an avenue for flourishing, fresh perspectives.

Awareness: In the long legacy of the theatrical medium, we are cognizant of the unevenness of opportunity. Growth walks hand-in-hand with work, so we value accountability and integrity.

Vision

We envision artistic spaces where imagination bridges differences; where inspiration bolsters shared aspirations; where theatrical communities feel supported; where we extend an open invitation to play in our creative Backyard.

Meet Our Founding Members

Meghan Griffin, Artistic Director

Meghan Griffin (yes, like from Family Guy) is a Producer, Casting Director, Actor, and Co-President of Paired Up Media, a bi-coastal, multi-faceted media and talent pairing company she co-founded in 2019. Meghan has worked in the entertainment industry since she was a teenager! She attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (BFA Theatre) and minored in Cultural Anthropology. While at NYU, she juggled internships at the Cherry Lane Theatre (where she also performed), CBS Primetime Casting, and NBCUni (Bravo!).

After graduating, Meghan pursued unscripted television casting and development. Her work on hit shows at some of the top production companies in the country led her to becoming a Director of Casting & Talent at ITV America. Meghan and her business partner, Martin Hardy, then started Paired Up Media in 2019, where they have had the pleasure of casting and developing content for networks such as Netflix, HBOMax, Hulu, HGTV, TLC, Bravo, ABC, MTV, and many others.

After 10+ years in television, Meghan is excited to merge her extensive production experience, acting training, and passion for theatre into her role with Backyard Stages, creating experiential, immersive theatrical events. It’ll be fun, as it damn well should be!

Tommy Nelms, Executive Director

Tommy Nelms is an actor, director, and producer with experience in both theatre and film, with extensive experience in bringing Shakespeare to life. He trained as an actor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (Stella Adler Studio, BFA Theatre), The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (London, Certificate), and the Missouri Fine Arts Academy (Certificate). Currently, he works as a Project Manager and Operations/Learning Development consultant and as an Instructor of STEAM Education for Rocket Club Academy.

Tommy has worked as an actor, director, producer for projects in stage and film, as a coach and instructor for children’s sports, and as an educator and operations/learning professional for high-growth companies across the country. Over the past few years, he has been immersing himself in theatrical development and non-traditional Shakespearean performance through The Back Room Shakespeare Project, Quest Players, and as an individual contributor with other companies in stage and film.

Tommy is excited to bring inclusive theatre and events opportunities to artists seeking to do meaningful work and to audiences who are craving non- traditional theatrical experiences!

Liz Gray, Director of Development

Liz Gray is a candidate for her MFA in Arts Leadership and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit and Nongovernmental Organization Management at Virginia Tech. Previously, she attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (Stella Adler Studio, BFA Theatre), The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (London, Certificate), and The Upright Citizens Brigade (NYC).

Liz has been an arts educator, improviser, director, actor, and adjudicator in schools, theatres, and competitions across the country. Over the past few years, she held the positions of Communications Director and Company Manager for the Colorado-based Merely Players theatre company, while also teaching on the faculty in the Performing Arts Department at Fort Lewis College. Recently, she worked as an instructor and project manager for Virginia Tech’s Center for Communicating Science; and, her assistantship is currently with Programming and Community Engagement at the Moss Arts Center.

Liz is passionate about the communication of science and research to non-scientists, multi-modal educational practices, aesthetic accessibility, lateralized leadership, generative board governance, and providing platforms for underrepresented theatrical work. All of this is to say… funny faces are her job.
